SANDY GIBBS AND MIKE TING
27 SEPTEMBER - 14 OCTOBER 2017
In May of 2017 I travelled to Taipei to investigate 15 people I had found on the internet. We had no knowledge or any contact with each other, total strangers in fact but we had one thing in common; we’re all called Mike Ting.
Between faith, certainty and doubt, these intimate strangers become strange intimates and reveal the subtle and sometimes ancient powers that shape their identities in a modern nation state, yet live in a country that lacks official recognition.
Gibbs’ mission is to re-stage an Olympic swimming event from the 1968 Mexico Olympics, albeit hampered by her disastrous attempts thus far at tracking down the original swimmers.
In January of this year, she travelled to Germany and employed the services of a local private eye to help track down two swimmers from the former East Germany.
Unsuccessful, Gibbs’ sleuthing instead becomes a latter-day encounter with the legacy of Stasi-era spies.
