IT'S A POND, NOT A MOAT

HIKALU CLARKE

18 OCTOBER - 4 NOVEMBER 2017

Clarke’s practice engages with relationship between architecture and occupant, focusing upon the post-9/11 shift towards Counter Terrorism architectural philosophies and Unpleasant Design.

It’s a pond, not a moat engages with the spatial agency of hostile urban design. The exhibition focuses upon how council installations are imbued with passive aggressive tactics that actively operate to deter behaviour deemed anti-social. As commercial interests continue to colonise public space, loiterers and the homeless are deemed as persona non grata. Through subtle intervention prolonged occupation is deterred - this logic informs the sculptures and audio works of the exhibition.
